FTC Affiliate Disclosure Rules: The Compliance Checklist

The FTC requires affiliate relationships to be disclosed clearly and conspicuously, close to where the recommendation appears. 'Clear' means unambiguous language a reader can't miss; 'conspicuous' means placement they'll actually see — not a footer.

How to fix it

  1. State the relationship in plain words: "If you buy through links on this page, we may earn a commission."
  2. Put it on every page that contains affiliate links, not a single site-wide footer.
  3. Repeat it near the first link on long pages — one disclosure at the top doesn't cover a link 2,000 words down.
  4. Keep it readable: same font size as body text, no hiding it in gray-on-gray.
